I received this question from someone the other day and thought it worthy of posting the answer for all to see. It’s about receding gums, something many people suffer from. Here’s the letter with the question…
Hello Dr. Copeland,
I have receding gums in certain location in my mouth that are starting to bother me. What is the holistic way to approach that problem?
Thank You,
Zvia.
Dear Zvia,
Great question. Many adults find themselves in a similar predicament of sensitivity on exposed roots. The root surface is ideally happily covered by bone along its length and by gum (gingival) tissue as the tooth emerges into the mouth.
Though the root may seem just like the enamel, structurally it is very different. Unlike enamel which is nearly entirely hard mineral, the dentin is both mineral and organic. The mineral component is like a honeycomb of straws radiating from the very center of the tooth extending towards the exterior of the tooth.
To get a visual, think of cutting a kiwi fruit on cross section. Within each “straw” which are referred to as dentinal tubules, is the living portion of the tooth: incoming and outgoing blood flow, lymph (waste removal) and nerve supply. This means that the nerve to a lesser or greater amount extends all the way to the outside of the tooth root. If not covered by bone or gum tissue, it can feel the presence of temperature (iced drinks), chemicals (such as sugar) or pH (as in acidic foods).
The first thing to discover – and this is something we have difficultly with – is why is the gum tissue receding to expose the root tissue? If this is not correctly diagnosed, absolutely nothing one does to alleviate the sensitivity will prevent further recession.
Possible causes for recession are:
You may be able to do some sleuthing by going back in history and discovering just when the recession began. As you can imagine, there are different treatment options for each of the above. My suggestion would be to see a good dentist and discuss your concerns with them. Share your thoughts and allow them to examine you thoroughly. They will find evidence – and should be able to show you clearly what factors are resulting in recession. Together you can decide on a plan of action without spinning your wheels or wasting your money.
Diet and hygiene are always first on my list of things to look into. However, single supplement, and no amount of cleaning will change the edges of incompatible crowns or destructive bite.
Hope this provides some direction.
Best,
Dr Cynthia
